‘Once upon a time in a faraway land, there was a princess
who had hair as black as ebony and skin as white as snow.’
Stories used to always start with the line ‘Once upon a
time’. Plots used to differ little. There would be a prince and a princess or a
poor but beautiful girl and a rich and equally handsome man. The woman would be
cursed by an evil witch or cursed by life itself – poverty. In the end, she
would be saved from distress by her prince charming who’d be riding in a white
horse. And now? There’s Fiona, an ogre princess you could hardly call
beautiful, fighting her way out of the tower she was locked in.
Literature had changed a lot. Gone was Hans Christian
Anderson’s type of women. No longer will the female be under the male and wait
for him to save her.
Women merely served as a pillar to boost a man’s masculinity
and test his virility. Women were never given importance. They never had the
right to get educated, get employed or have a position in the government. They
lived to give birth and serve men’s every whim. That was back in the old days
though. Little by little women were given the independence to disengage
themselves from man’s shadows.
A woman leading a country used to be a joke but now has
served as an inspiration. Women are now given the right to get educated, get a
job, serve as a breadwinner and have a position in the government.
Equality has been observed and rights have finally obtained
their meaning. Times have changed.
